Trip Overview

Helambu Trek is one of the easiest and shortest treks in the north of Kathmandu. Helambu trek is specially designed for those trekkers who wants to explore the typical Hyolmo culture of Nepal. The word Helambu is driven by the word Hyolmo; an indigenous people mainly from Eastern Himalayan regions of Nepal. Helambu Trek is easily accessible from Kathmandu valley and is in lower altitude providing the best and mesmerizing views of the Himalayan range, varieties of flora and fauna, beautiful and lush green forest, diversified landscape, beautiful and culturally rich villages. Despite being close to the capital city, the trail, local settlements, and the natural beauty is still intact and untouched and the picturesque view of hills and mountains adds to the beauty of the place. 

Helambu Trek starts from Kathmandu sightseeing at four UNESCO World Heritage Sites including: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath. Enjoy a scenic drive to Sundarijal and trek to Chisapani via Shivapuri National Park. Passing through the villages like Chisapani, Kutumsang, and ultimately to Tharipati at an elevation of 3650m; the ultimate elevation/altitude of Helambu Trek. The trail then descends through Tarkeghyang, Shermathyang and to Melamchi Pul Bazaar and drive back to Kathmandu. Observe the diversified landscape, the culturally rich Sherpa and Tamang cultures along with their lifestyles, scenic hillside, and snow-capped mountains.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu (1300m)

Welcome to Kathmandu. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, meet and greet our representatives from Moonline Tours P. Ltd and transfer to the hotel. Short description of Helambu Trek en-route and check-in at the hotel. Roam around the streets of Kathmandu if you have free time.

Overnight at Kathmandu.

Guided sightseeing in Kathmandu at four UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Kathmandu Durbar square; an ancient courtyard with monuments from the 13th to 15th centuries, Pashupatinath; a holy two-storied temple of Hindus dedicated to Lord Shiva at the bank of Bagmati River, Swayambhunath; an old Buddhist stupa at the hillock having important significance for both Hindus and Buddhist and Boudhanath; a largest Buddhist stupa in the world with more than 200 monks praying in its surrounding. After exploring the historically and culturally rich Kathmandu, a short meeting with the trekking guide. A short discussion on Helambu Trek and the trail and the trekking gears you may need while trekking. Roam around the streets of Kathmandu in the evening.

Enjoy an hour of drive to Sundarijal and trek to Chisapani at an elevation of 2300m. Passing through the beautiful waterfalls and walking along the Shivapuri National Park, the trail leads us to the beautiful Mulkharka village; especially inhabited by Tamang people. Crossing the Rhododendron and Oak forest and enjoying the picturesque scenery the trail leads us to Chisapani. Observe the mesmerizing view of Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Annapurna, Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal, Dorje Lakpa and Mt. Gaurishankar.

Walking Time: 4 hours.

Leaving Chisapani behind, the trail descends passing through meadows and fields with magnificent views of mountains till we reach Pathi Bhangyang; a village mostly inhabited by Brahmin and Chhetri. A small ascend from Pathi Bhangyang leads us to Thakuni Bhangyang; a village of Sherpa with small and white chortens. Passing the Chipling village, climb the stone staircase that leads us to Jhogin Danda. Passing through Rhododendron forest, the trail descends down to Gul Bhangyang; a village of Tamang, observing the magnificent view of snow-capped mountains. The trail climbs up through Oak forest to another pass and descends downwards leading us to Kutumsang at an elevation of 2446m.

Walking Time: 5 hours.

From Kutumsang, the trail ascends steeply through the Rhododendron and Fir forest leading us to Yurin danda offering a mesmerizing view of Langtang and Gosaikunda Peaks. Following the up and down hills observing the meadows and streams, the trail climbs to a hilltop with colorful praying flags at an elevation of 3650m. Observe the close-up view of the Langtang region and the landscape.

Overnight at Tharipati.
Walking Time: 5 hours.

Enjoy the mesmerizing and stunning view of Sunrise in the morning along with the amazing views of Gosaikunda peak, Langtang peak, Ganesh Himal, etc. The trail descends down through the ridge of Rhododendron and Pine forest. Offering the best views of Jugal Himal and Helambu Valley. Passing through beautiful villages and forested areas to reach Melamchi Gaun; a Sherpa settlement with unique culture and lifestyle. The trail descends down after crossing the gumbas and passing through the dense forest with prayer flags and chortens that leads us to Melamchi Khola and after crossing the suspension bridge, the trail ascends uphill till we reach Nakote village; a Sherpa Village. Observe the monasteries and gumbas enroute that leads us to Tarkeghyang; a beautiful Sherpa village at an elevation of 2743m. Observe the oldest monastery of the Langtang region that gives a rustic look of villages in Mustang and Dolpo.

Walking Time: 5 hours.

From Tarkeghyang, the trail is not as difficult as the altitude is leveled. Crossing the lush green forests, scenic waterfalls and streams, the trail continues as we reach around the wide valley end between the Parachin and the Sherpa village of Gangyul. Furthermore of the walk from Gangyul leads us to Shermathang at an elevation of 2621m, the last stop for the day. Explore the monasteries and gumbas around Shermathang and culture and lifestyle of local people along with the stunning views of Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal, Gosaikunda peak, etc.

Walking Time: 4 hours.

Leaving the beautiful Shermathang village behind, the trail descends downwards through the meadows and fields. Passing through many local villages and observing the stunning views of mountain range, the trail descends till we reach Melamchi Pul Bazar; the ending point of our Helambu Trek at an elevation of 846m. Melamchi Pul Bazaar is mostly inhabited by Sherpa people, but there are also people of other ethnics. Explore around Melamchi Pul Bazar in the evening and interact with local people to explore the culture and lifestyle of the local people.

Walking Time: 4 hours.

From Melamchi Pul Bazar, drive back to Kathmandu and observe the diversified landscape and dispersed local settlements. Upon arrival at Kathmandu, check-in at the hotel. Rest day free for self-relaxation and roam around the streets of Kathmandu in the evening for shopping. Overnight at Kathmandu.

Rest till departure. Our representative from Moonline Tours P. Ltd will drop you at Tribhuvan International Airport 3 hours prior to your departure time/schedule to board your onward journey.
